Sailing the Croatian Coast

sailing croatia from split to dubrovnik

Our second leg of our European trip—and my husband’s first time overseas—was nothing short of unforgettable. What made it even more special? Sharing it with two close couples we love dearly, all coming together for one incredible week sailing the Croatian coast.

We began in Split, where history, energy, and the Adriatic Sea collide.

Split: Where Ancient History Meets Coastal Energy

Split was vibrant, lively, and full of character. We stayed right in the heart of Old Town at Heritage Hotel Santa Lucia, which put us steps away from everything.

Our days were spent wandering the Riva Promenade, soaking in the sea views and café culture, and diving headfirst into the city’s deep history. Exploring Diocletian’s Palace felt surreal—ancient Roman ruins seamlessly woven into everyday life. We visited the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and Jupiter’s Temple, walked through the Archaeological Museum Split, and climbed high above the city into Marjan Forest Park for sweeping views.

One of my favorite moments? Rubbing the toe of the Grgur Ninski Statue—a local tradition said to bring good luck. Wishes were made.

Setting Sail on the Adriatic

Then it was time. We met our crew through Yacht Getaways, boarded our catamaran, grabbed celebratory drinks, and set sail into the Adriatic Sea.

About an hour in, our captain anchored us in a secluded cove for the night. While dinner was prepared onboard, we slipped into the crystal-clear water, floating as the sun dipped below the horizon. It was the perfect beginning—quiet, golden, and magical.

Hidden Coves & Stari Grad

Our first full day at sea delivered adventure. After breakfast, we sailed to a rugged cove dotted with mysterious caves—once used during the Croatian War of Independence to hide submarines and military equipment. Paddleboards and the dinghy came out, and we explored every hidden corner.

Later, we sailed to Stari Grad, considered one of the oldest towns in Europe. The afternoon was slow and perfect—swimming, drinks, sunshine—followed by an unforgettable dinner at a vineyard high in the hills. The views, the wine, the company—it felt like a dream. The next morning, we wandered the quiet streets before heading back out to sea.

Hvar: Fortress Views & Evening Bites

We docked in the bay near Hvar, enjoying onboard snacks before taking a water taxi into town. Hvar was ancient and elegant, with a pulse that felt electric at night.

We climbed to the Hvar Fortress, where sweeping views stretched endlessly over the sea. A cocktail inside a charming café tucked into the fortress walls was a highlight. That evening, we turned dinner into an adventure—wandering from restaurant to restaurant, sharing small plates and stories as we explored.

Korčula: Walled Beauty & a Bar Like No Other

Next came Korčula, a compact, walled town filled with history. Often referred to as Little Dubrovnik, its narrow streets, fortifications, and centuries-old buildings were fascinating to explore.

And then—Massimo Cocktail Bar. One of the coolest bars I’ve ever experienced. Set inside a medieval tower, you climb a ladder to the top where drinks are hoisted up in a bucket. Unforgettable.

That night ended with dancing and laughter before sleep. The next day felt like a fairytale.

A Message from the Sea

Anchored in a stunning cove surrounded by mega-yachts—one owned by the Jan Koum, no less—my friend and I floated to shore hoping to find shells. Instead, I found something extraordinary: an old Johnnie Walker bottle with a handwritten message inside.

The note, written in Spanish and dated from the 1990s, felt like a message across time. I still have it to this day. One of those moments you never forget.

Mljet: Nature, Silence & Sacred History

Our final island stop was Mljet, largely protected as Mljet National Park. With a tiny seasonal population, it felt untouched and peaceful.

We explored by electric bike, winding through lush landscapes to the island monastery St. Mary’s Island, a former Benedictine sanctuary set in the middle of a saltwater lake. The stillness was profound.

That evening, we shared a seafood dinner at a small dockside restaurant—simple, fresh, and perfect.

Dubrovnik: A City That Took My Breath Away

On our final sailing day, we squeezed in cliff jumping and one last swim before our captain slowly guided us along the magnificent walls of Dubrovnik.

I’ve always had a deep love for archaeology and ancient history. Rome once brought me to tears—and Dubrovnik did the same. The marble streets, layered architecture, and monumental walls were overwhelming in the best way.

We spent two nights here and wished for many more. My biggest tip: wake up early and explore before the crowds. The quiet beauty is unforgettable.

Why This Trip Will Always Stay With Me

Sharing our catamaran with two other couples we didn’t know, along with the most incredible crew—Levi, our Captain, and Lauren, our Skipper—made this experience even richer. Their warmth, knowledge, and care elevated everything.

The crystal-clear Adriatic, the summer sun, the rhythm of life at sea—this was truly an experience of a lifetime.

And the best part? I’m already planning our next boat charter to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.

Stay tuned—another unforgettable adventure is coming.
